The Gray Man (2022)

Synopsis

The movie begins with Six (Ryan Gosling) being detained and Fitzroy (Billy Bob Thornton) recruiting him to be a part of his operation. At the same time that he would be in prison, he would instead be an agent specializing in assassination. Two decades into being an agent, a special kill is assigned to him and has to take out his own. This is where he learns that the people supplying this op are dirty and he might be next on the hit list. Six goes ghost after this, and the people who hired him are now trying to kill him. They hired a sociopath to do it, by the name of Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans). The closest person to Six is the man that recruited him. This leads Lloyd right to him and as a result, Lloyd abducts his granddaughter (Julia Butters). The movie transitions from an escape mission to a rescue mission. Lloyd also puts a bounty on Six’s head. Luckily, Six has the help of Dani (Ana de Arms), someone he previously had an op with.

Interpretation

After completing the film its themes were not self-evident to me and that can mean that it has a certain depth that I haven’t yet reached or it means that there’s not much beyond the surface. I had a great time watching the film the action scenes were intense and unique. Also, the character dynamics seemed realistic along with everyone’s actions. Apart from Lloyd choosing to continue to hold Claire hostage. As soon as he got to the maze he should’ve let her go to escape but instead, he wanted to fight it out with Six. The relationship between Six and Claire would be the strongest one in the movie. This is because of the time they spent while Six had to guard her. Six’s only family is Fitzroy and the same for Claire so they kinda become family in that aspect. I think Six views his relationship with Claire as an opportunity to be a better guardian than the one he had. There’s a scene with Claire and Six where Claire asks what his tattoo is and he responds by saying it’s the name of a greek man trying to get up a hill. This is Sisyphus which is the story of a man endlessly pushing a rock up a hill. I believe this is supposed to represent the life of The Gray Man. Six’s life is full of endless effort just to find himself in the same place he was yesterday. I believe this cyclical nature to his life changed after he found people in his life that he cared for like Fitzroy and Claire.
